Our Sustainability Promise
We recognise the influence and impact that our business has on the environment and the communities in which we operate. We are committed to sustainability and to minimising our environmental footprint, while enhancing the wellbeing of our guests, employees and local communities. We are supported in this journey by our sustainability accreditation partner, Green Tourism.
Supporting Our Community
We are proud to support our local County Durham community through various charitable and social initiatives. We partner with Charity Escapes to maximise the impact of our raffle prize donations, ensuring they provide the greatest benefit to local charities. Additionally, we contribute 5% of bar takings for any charity event booked at the hotel, further reinforcing our commitment to giving back. Our support extends to local organisations, including Heighington FC, as we continue to engage with and uplift the community around us.
We promote inclusive breaks with tickets to Beamish and Bowes Museum locally. We also promote some closer attractions in our guest directory in each room as attached.
Environmental Initiatives
We are committed to reducing our energy consumption and carbon footprint through significant investments in sustainability. We closely monitor and record meter readings weekly and monthly, allowing us to track and optimise energy use. As part of an RPI scheme, we contribute to biomass-generated savings, supporting government sustainability initiatives. Regular supply checks, pressure monitoring, and output measuring help identify opportunities for further energy savings.
Additionally, we extend our commitment to the local community by supplying some nearby houses from meters off our main supply, reinforcing our dedication to responsible energy management.
Our Team
We are committed to creating a safe, healthy, and sustainable workplace for all team members. Our staff play an active role in minimising our environmental impact, with regular sustainability training and the support of an on-site Sustainability Champion. We closely monitor business and staff travel, encouraging public transport and car-sharing wherever possible to reduce emissions.
To further our commitment to sustainability, we have incorporated EV vehicles into our operations. Additionally, we track energy and activity targets, reporting progress monthly to our head office, ensuring continuous improvement in our environmental initiatives.
Guest Support
We encourage our guests to join us in our sustainability efforts through a range of eco-friendly initiatives. Cards in every bedroom remind guests to reuse towels, helping to conserve water and energy. We have transitioned to bulk toiletries to reduce plastic waste, and many of our rooms feature energy-saving card holders, ensuring power is only used when needed. As part of the Stay Your Way programme, guests can opt to skip a room clean in exchange for a free drink, reducing energy and water consumption. This initiative also educates guests on ways to minimise their environmental impact and provides a feedback forum for sustainability suggestions, allowing us to continuously improve our eco-friendly practices.
